1. I'm set to be chrismated into the Orthodox Church on June 7, 2009. Pentecost.

2. I'm traveling to Rwanda and Uganda with Erik Ehn and a team from CalArts University on July 7, 2009.

  1. The definition of "chrismated", if you please. I'm assuming it's a conversion or baptism type experience?

  2. Chrismation is an "anointing with holy oil." This ceremony usually comes immediately after the sacrament of Baptism and is important for many reasons: the tradition of anointing kings and priests in the Hebraic tradition, the representation of the Holy Spirit descending as He did upon Christ after His Baptism, the sealing of the covenant between man and God. Special oil, called "chrism," which is usually blessed in the Holy Land, is painted on the forehead, hands, feet, mouth, eyes, on the supplicant in the shape of a cross. Many prayers of humility and commitment to Christ are offered within the ceremony. Most Protestants or Catholics who join the Orthodox Church are Chrismated (instead of being baptized again and then chrismated), as their first baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is deigned effective.

:) Hope this is helpful. It'd be amazing if you could come up!
